I don't have an hour a day to work out.

I was watching Good Morning America the other day and they had a segment in which they quoted a new Harvard study of 34,000 women showing that in order to maintain your current body weight you need 1 hour a day of moderate exercise. This new study revises older data such as the American Heart Association's recommendation of 30 minutes a day for people 18 to 65.

"An hour a day?!" you say and I say "Yes, of course." For someone like me, I don't see this as an issue. I find that not only does my body look better from exercise, but I feel better & I seem to be healthier than most women my age. Also, the emotional stability I received from the seratonin release and the stress relief I get is so much worth that time, as well as the fact that they have proven in studies that exercise boosts your brain power!!! How could I not devote an hour a day, and how can you not?

As I mention this new study to my friend who is complaining about her husband having to take pills for his cholesterol and their admitted lack of energy, she responds with "Who has an hour a day to exercise." As I state this to another friend and client who also has too many health issues for someone in her forties, I hear that she feels guilty carving out just an hour a week to exercise. This is crazy talk I say. (easy for me to say, the trainer who works out for her job.) Would you rather be dead 24hours a day or work out 1 hour a day I ask. They fumble for feeble excuses. The bottom line is that you must if you want to live a fruitful older life or even if you want to live a little longer. I don't see how an hour a day for ouselves is too much.

We all have heard that on an airplane they ask us to place our mask on first before placing the mask over our children. This is because we need to be alive to assist our children. The same goes for our health. We must be alive & healthy so that we are here for our children and also so that we are not a burden to them as sickly parents they must take care of. So, if we know that as parents or even partners to loved ones we must take care of our emtional tanks first & our physical health first so that we can give to others , then it is absolutely necessary to carve out some time EACH day for our mental, physical & emotional health. Otherwise we are operating on fumes and have nothing to give except snappy answers and disconnected chatter to those we love.

Buddy-up This Year and Be Successful

Starting something new and creating a new behavior or habit from it can be very difficult. Often an idea can spark you to move, but keeping on track is a whole other beast!!
New behaviors require not only action, but also continued thought change. The reason you weren't doing it before was because of your thoughts about it. For instance if you have an attitude of dislike toward working out, then if you start, you will find all sorts of reasons (thoughts) to help back-up your position of why you shouldn't go.
Of course, hiring a professional trainer can help you have a scheduled time to go giving you reason to be there, and we can also help you with accountability. However, if you add one or two friends into the mix, you can increase your chances of staying with it.
On days when you just don't feel like going, there will be someone to encourage you other than your trainer. You might feel worse cancelling on a friend than just a hired trainer and hopefully when your down, your friend will be up and pull you along. Also, buddy training makes training so much more affordable and yet you are still getting a great education & support system from your trainer. You will feel special having such a thing in your life and you will really create a lasting bond with your friend (or family member). So don't delay, get started today with a friend.

You Can Do What You Want To Do!

You Can Do What You Want To Do. You can reach the goals you set for yourself if you just make an effort to work towards your goals on a daily basis. You can't let fear stop you from moving forward.
Fear can be a subtle thing sometimes that creeps in and causes paralysis. Something as small as a thought like "I can't do that because I don't have any experience." or "I can't approach that person and speak to them about what I want to do, they will think I'm crazy, that I don't know enough." etc. etc. These thoughts can often keep people from moving forward because the waters are uncharted for them. However, if you can't put your toe in unchartered waters, how will you ever experience something new to help you move forward. No you can't let fear stop you. If you are afraid that you can't do something, educate yourself, find someone to help. That is what a Life Coach can do for you.
We help people move past the fear, see new possibilities and teach many life possibilites and lessons that you may have not learned in your family system growing up.
You know, I have friends who have never been able to manage their money. They are constantly in debt and can't get out. Are they stupid? No. Some are college educated. Do they not have decent jobs? No. They just were never taught by anyone how to handle money. They came from families that spent a lot and they never learned about saving, etc. A Life Coach, can help with things like this. We can also help people learn to make better choices and how to make decisions. There is so much to be gained from spending some time talking to someone who has specialized in learning an expansive view on the world and is able to give it back to others.
Don't get held up, or held down or held back. Move forward with a Life Coach. And if you are not reaching your health & weight goals call a trainer and get someone to help you stay motivated and on track so that you can finally reach your goals this year!!
Jimmy Carter said "You can do what you want to do, sometimes you can do it even better than you thought you could."

Don't get too busy to get busy

I was thinking about how busy we all are during the holidays. It is only December 1st and I've already been invited to 3 holiday events and that got me thinking about all of you out there who work full time and try to go to the gym. With all of the holiday parties, how do you have time to work and work-out. It sounds exhausting.

However, I would love to remind you that working out can do just the exact opposite for you; it can energize you. In a time where there are so many sugary snacks around that keep our blood sugar shooting up and crashing, we need all the extra help we can get. So, need I remind you? Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and skip your exercise or your sleep. Both of these things are too important for keeping you healthy.

I just read a study that said people who sleep less than 7 hours a night are more susceptible to the flu. There will be a lot of flu and other germs floating amongst us all at these holiday gatherings, so please get plenty of rest and get in your exercise. OH and did I mention drink plenty of water to help fill you and keep you hydrated, and please if you are drinking give your keys up to a friend or simply call a cab.

So, lets stay safe and healthy through the holidays!

Holiday Foods and their calories are upon us!!!

It is that time of year when there seems to be food, especially sweets, around every corner. I have discovered that even people who do not celebrate Holidays still suffer from the extra calories that seem to be everywhere.
At coffee shops there are tempting peppermint drinks that often have whip cream or some other sugary substance, and of course all the tempting cookies, cakes & bars that they show in the case. Fast food places (which you should not be at) offer specialty shakes that seem to call out at the Holidays. Friends bring sweet treats to share to the workplace and so many workplace holiday events or happy hours. There are many parties with alcohol, cakes, pies, cookies, layered dishes, etc.....where are the vegetables? Oh, I see a few being dipped in ranch or smothered with cheese.
This is the reality of food at this time of the year and the other reality that often goes along with it is that people indulge. We consume more than we would. The weather isn't as nice to get out and get a little exercise and all the weight we have kept away all year long from our slowing metabolisms seems to jump aboard in a few short months. We can't let this happen this year, or any year actually.
There are some simple solutions for handling this problem. Now is the time to kick up the caloric exertion. If you already exercise, then maybe it is a good time to get a trainer for a couple of months to show you something new, or push you a little harder. It is better to do it now rather than wait until January after you've already added weight. It is easier to keep the weight off than to try to lose it after gaining. If you don't exercise, then get out for a daily walk, or take a class at a gym or community center.
If you are going to make some bad food choices and indulge at a party, then make sure you eat healthy for as much of the weeks prior and after that you can. The day of the even stick to healthy veggies and lean protein so that you get your daily needed intake. Drink water when you first arrive to a restaurant or party so that you won't over indulge. The water will help fill you. Also, at a restaurant order a healthy soup or salad first to help fill you before heavy entree's or desserts.
The biggest concern I have for everyone is to please not drink too much, especially if you are driving. Alcohol calories quickly add up and alcohol quickly impairs our abilities. Drink water between each alcoholic beverage. If you ned to look like you have a drink, or a simple soda or shirley temple so you can look like you are drinking, or even non-alcoholic beer.
Enjoy the Holidays and the food responsibly with plenty of exercise and rest and you can stay away from those dreaded pounds that you will be crying over in the spring. Of course, if you find yourself with those pounds call me and I can set up a training program for you privately or with a group.
Stay Healthy
