Hard Facts About Weight loss, Portion Control & Exercise. Personal Training. As I surf around the web and read other blogs, I'm noticing that there are a lot of people out there struggling to lose weight, stick to an exercise plan and/or get healthy. They are blogging about their trials and tribulations, and it seems that I see a trend of exercise getting a bad rep.

It is true, that if you begin an exercise program you become more hungry and many people actually begin to increase their caloric intake. Sometimes this even leads to weight gain. The formula is very simple: Calories In vs Calories Out. If you start exercising and then you start consuming more food, you will not lose any weight from exercising. You will, however, lower your blood pressure, lower your resting heart rate, lower your risk of disease, increase oxygenation to your blood, increase your muscle strength & endurance, increase your bone density, increase serotonin & melatonin in your body as well as usually you will become more emotionally happy.

One of my favorite blogs is The French Skinny Experiment. My friend Karen is one of the co-bloggers and I think she is a wonderfully funny writer and a great photographer. She has really embraced portion control and it has worked beautifully for her. She has become accustomed to very small portions. While I don't feel that this it at all a risk to her health because she eats primarily healthy choices, I do think that it isn't realistic amounts of food for most people let alone most Americans. Regular exercise would allow a person to intake a little larger portion and provide all of the benefits I listed above.

I should mention that in the blog they are both very active women, so this provides daily cardio. If one can manage to find time to walk to the store and walk to the park and play actively with their children for many hours a day then your cardio needs will most likely be fulfilled. However, I think we are not always situated in areas or with lives that allow for walking to the store. With this in mind, you do need to get cardio exercise daily for more reasons than weight loss.

Heart Disease is still the number one killer of women in America today. Cardiovascular exercise builds the heart muscle the way that lifting a weight builds a bicep or any other muscle. With the heart muscle stronger it allows the blood pressure to slow down. The heart can more efficiently pump out a larger amount of blood that can travel through the blood stream slower before another push is needed by the heart. Basically, the heart has more time to relax and lasts longer. It doesn't have to work so hard.

Obesity is now becoming the leading killer of Americans in general. With portion control, obesity can be combated for sure. However, when many people just go on portion control only with no guidance, they often just portion control the horrible "food impostors" they have been eating all along. It is very important when doing portion control to give the body healthy food so that it can absorb the nutrients and not keep telling the brain that it is hungry. See if the body doesn't get the nutrients it needs, it will just keep telling you its hungry. Many people than fail with their portion control. This is the sad fact why when eating junk food people can eat and eat often without feeling full. The brain is just taking in the pleasure without the body getting nutrients.

To sum it all up, even when portion control is successful for weight loss, the body still needs the exercise. I once heard a saying "A great diet can never make up for not exercising." There are so many other benefits that come from exercise that it is still necessary to get it in. If there is not a weight issue, half an hour to an hour 4 to 7 days a week will do to keep your bones strong and your heart healthy. Even thin people who eat well often suffer from osteoporosis and high blood pressure and/or cholesterol.

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comLaura Fortinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18377177375092412669noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-79179322451960912322010-08-02T15:46:00.000-07:002010-08-02T16:04:27.960-07:00How To Get A Man To Respect You - Life CoachingLove and respect should go hand in hand. He's suppose to love you and you are suppose to respect him. However, too many women aren't finding love because they haven't found self-respect. This is one of the keys to getting a man to respect your feelings and you as a person so that he can fall in love with you and get past the stafe of lust or infatuation.

Treat Yourself With Respect, Love & Kindness
Do not make choices that are disrespectful to the life you want and who you want to be. You can't get love without giving love and knowing how to love, therefore, the only way to get respect from someone is to respect yourself.

Be Yourself
When you can be true to yourself and not try to act the way you think a man wants you to act, you will find a man who loves you for who you are. If you try to be something you're not, others can sense it. They feel the lack of security you have in yourself and then they can't really trust you, love you or respect you because they don't know you.

Dont Sleep With Him To Soon
Men Don't fall in love easily, They fall in lust. If you sleep with a man before he has had a chance to fall in love with you, chances are he may just move on because he got what he came for. Take some time. Get to know him and see if he and you are looking for the same things. You don't want to feel attached to someone who ultimately never wants the same things in life as you.

Don't Send The Wrong Message
If you want a relationship, Don't behave in ways that say you are just looking for sex.

Do Not Tolerate Disrespect
Don't tolerate disrespect from him, firends or your family. Be loving to yourself and when you are disrespected by others kindly remove yourself from that situation or tell that person that their behavior is hurtful and disrespectful and you are going to leave if it continues, and definitely follow through. If a man see's that his friends or yours or even your family disrespect you, then he will feel he can too.

Never Lie
A man can not respect you if he can not trust you. Honesty and integrity are keys to respect.

Understand The Power Of Your Words
Don't underestimate what you say. According to Dr. Emerson Eggerichs who wrote the book "Love & Respect" men feel contempt when they are criticized and they feel disrespected. Therefore, they can not respect you in return. Women's criticisms can crush men. Our words have a lot of power and we must be careful with them.

Don't Chase Him
Today it is OK to ask a man out, but remember, ultimately men will come after who they want. They don't need you to chase them. If a man is showing a lack of interest and you are chasing him down, he will not respect you. If he isn't doing any pursuing, he is not interested in you. He may like you enough to sleep with you on occasion but he is not going to respect or love you. If he isn't interested, try not to take it personally and move on to a man that is.

Don't Use Sex As A Tool
Once you get to the part of the relationship where you are physically intimate, never use sex to get what you want or to get back at him, and never bargain with sex. He will be confused and definitely will not respect you and your feelings.

Listen To Him
Try to understand his point of view instead of just jumping in with yours and try to listen without thinking about what you want to say next. Allow him to feel heard and respected so that he can do the same for you.

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comLaura Fortinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18377177375092412669noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-48406753217497533312010-07-14T16:36:00.000-07:002010-07-14T17:09:16.765-07:00Yoga or Pilates Balls for Stress Relief in Personal Training and At Home

Pilates or Yoga balls can be usefull in the relief of stress, however, there are two different types of Yoga balls and they are used very differently to releive stress. The first type of balls we will talk about are more commonly known as Swiss balls, exercise balls or fitness balls. They were invented in Italy in 1963 by Aquilino Cosani as a toy. He called them Gymnastik. An English doctor, Dr Elseth Kong and a physical therapist named Mary Quinton began using them for pediatric for pediatric neurological rehab programs. When Swiss physical therapist Dr. Susan Klein-Vogelbach, began using them for back rehabilitation and orthopaedic rehabilitation in Switzerland. In the 1980's American physical therapists brought them back to America and in the 1990's they moved into athletic and fitness training settings. They are larger in size and can be used in many different exercises, especially core stabilizing exercises.

The second type of balls that are sometimes called Yoga balls are the smaller massage balls. One popularly known brand is Acuball. Acuball was developed by Dr. Michael A Cohen,Chiropractor. Acuballs are small with rubber protuberances and they can be heated. Another well known brand is The Miracle Ball developed by Elaine Petrone, teacher, speaker and author in pain and stress management. The Miracle Ball is squishy, soft and smooth. They are also heatable.

These smaller balls are used for muscle relaxation, pressure point work and toxin release from the muscle through pressure and heat stimulation.

Stress is thought to be one of the most common causes of illness. One definition of stress in Miriam Webster's disctionary is: A physical, chemical or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation. Stress can result from either internal or external factors. Internal factors being those that are emotional in nature and external being things such as job, shcool, home relationships etc. Proper stress management involves reducing or controlling tension or stress in stressful situations by making emotional and physical changes.

When something internal or external causes a stress reaction, our body goes into fight or flight and releases the hormone Cortisol. Cortisol is a necessary hormone for our body and small amounts provide good side effects such as a quick release of adrenaline to help in stressful or frightening situations, lower sensitivity to pain, increased memory function, increased immunity and it helps our bodies maintain homeostasis. However, too much Cortisol, like too much of anything, can be bad. When our bodies feel stress and release Cortisol, we also need to be able to enter the opposite side of the stress which is relaxation. However, in today's society, with all the pressures we face, it is often hard to enter into relaxation.

Exercise is a great way for peple to release tension and get rid of stress. Exercise itself does release Cortisol for use in the exercises, however, the overall effect of exercise is one of lessened stress and tension. Exercise balls can be used for physically challengin exercises that will increase muscle strengthe and development while lowering your overall stress level. They can also be used to do Yoga moves such as Upward Facing Dog, Down Dog, Seated Stork, Warrior I, II & III, Childs Pose and others. Doing Yoga on the ball causes relaxation. The deep breathing and stretching through the movements will bring about relaxation of the mind and body.

Another great way to relieve stress is through physical and mental relaxation of massage. Massage, heat and pressure relax muscles and release built up toxins such as lactic acid and others. Even excess stress hormones can settle in the muscles and joints and massage can flush them out. With the smaller massage balls you can stimulate, massage and heat your own muscles by placing the ball under the tense or pained muscle and using your own body weight you can massage and stretch the muscle through slow relaxing resting pressure, rocking, rolling and rotating on the ball.

So in conclusion, yes fitness balls, massage balls, Swiss balls, or Yoga or Pilates on the ball. All of it can relieve stress.

Ciao,Laura FortinoBella Body & Mind of Huntington Beachhttp://www.bellabodyandmind.com/
Laura Fortinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18377177375092412669noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-72506602740049674382010-06-01T15:14:00.000-07:002010-06-01T15:34:28.389-07:00New Huntington Beach Personal Trainer-Lindsey Newton. This new study revises older data such as the American Heart Association's recommendation of 30 minutes a day for people 18 to 65.

"An hour a day?!" you say and I say "Yes, of course." For someone like me, I don't see this as an issue. I find that not only does my body look better from exercise, but I feel better & I seem to be healthier than most women my age. Also, the emotional stability I received from the seratonin release and the stress relief I get is so much worth that time, as well as the fact that they have proven in studies that exercise boosts your brain power!!! How could I not devote an hour a day, and how can you not?

As I mention this new study to my friend who is complaining about her husband having to take pills for his cholesterol and their admitted lack of energy, she responds with "Who has an hour a day to exercise." As I state this to another friend and client who also has too many health issues for someone in her forties, I hear that she feels guilty carving out just an hour a week to exercise. This is crazy talk I say. (easy for me to say, the trainer who works out for her job.) Would you rather be dead 24hours a day or work out 1 hour a day I ask. They fumble for feeble excuses. The bottom line is that you must if you want to live a fruitful older life or even if you want to live a little longer. I don't see how an hour a day for ouselves is too much.

We all have heard that on an airplane they ask us to place our mask on first before placing the mask over our children. This is because we need to be alive to assist our children. The same goes for our health. We must be alive & healthy so that we are here for our children and also so that we are not a burden to them as sickly parents they must take care of. So, if we know that as parents or even partners to loved ones we must take care of our emtional tanks first & our physical health first so that we can give to others , then it is absolutely necessary to carve out some time EACH day for our mental, physical & emotional health. Otherwise we are operating on fumes and have nothing to give except snappy answers and disconnected chatter to those we love.

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.com/

Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-56889079002394256132010-03-08T21:07:00.000-08:002010-03-08T21:16:49.009-08:00VisionYou must have a Vision first in order to have the life you want. Often an idea can spark you to move, but keeping on track is a whole other beast!!
New behaviors require not only action, but also continued thought change. The reason you weren't doing it before was because of your thoughts about it. For instance if you have an attitude of dislike toward working out, then if you start, you will find all sorts of reasons (thoughts) to help back-up your position of why you shouldn't go.
Of course, hiring a professional trainer can help you have a scheduled time to go giving you reason to be there, and we can also help you with accountability. However, if you add one or two friends into the mix, you can increase your chances of staying with it.
On days when you just don't feel like going, there will be someone to encourage you other than your trainer. You might feel worse cancelling on a friend than just a hired trainer and hopefully when your down, your friend will be up and pull you along. Also, buddy training makes training so much more affordable and yet you are still getting a great education & support system from your trainer. You will feel special having such a thing in your life and you will really create a lasting bond with your friend (or family member). So don't delay, get started today with a friend.

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.com/Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-59867022674494788122010-02-04T13:41:00.000-08:002010-02-04T20:03:19.053-08:00You Can Do What You Want To Do!You Can Do What You Want To Do. You can reach the goals you set for yourself if you just make an effort to work towards your goals on a daily basis. You can't let fear stop you from moving forward.
Fear can be a subtle thing sometimes that creeps in and causes paralysis. Something as small as a thought like "I can't do that because I don't have any experience." or "I can't approach that person and speak to them about what I want to do, they will think I'm crazy, that I don't know enough." etc. etc. These thoughts can often keep people from moving forward because the waters are uncharted for them. However, if you can't put your toe in unchartered waters, how will you ever experience something new to help you move forward. No you can't let fear stop you. If you are afraid that you can't do something, educate yourself, find someone to help. That is what a Life Coach can do for you.
We help people move past the fear, see new possibilities and teach many life possibilites and lessons that you may have not learned in your family system growing up.
You know, I have friends who have never been able to manage their money. They are constantly in debt and can't get out. Are they stupid? No. Some are college educated. Do they not have decent jobs? No. They just were never taught by anyone how to handle money. They came from families that spent a lot and they never learned about saving, etc. A Life Coach, can help with things like this. We can also help people learn to make better choices and how to make decisions. There is so much to be gained from spending some time talking to someone who has specialized in learning an expansive view on the world and is able to give it back to others.
Don't get held up, or held down or held back. Move forward with a Life Coach. And if you are not reaching your health & weight goals call a trainer and get someone to help you stay motivated and on track so that you can finally reach your goals this year!!
Jimmy Carter said "You can do what you want to do, sometimes you can do it even better than you thought you could."

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.com/
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-35655811403944937812009-12-01T15:23:00.000-08:002009-12-01T15:31:11.486-08:00Don't get too busy to get busyI was thinking about how busy we all are during the holidays. It is only December 1st and I've already been invited to 3 holiday events and that got me thinking about all of you out there who work full time and try to go to the gym. With all of the holiday parties, how do you have time to work and work-out. It sounds exhausting.

However, I would love to remind you that working out can do just the exact opposite for you; it can energize you. In a time where there are so many sugary snacks around that keep our blood sugar shooting up and crashing, we need all the extra help we can get. So, need I remind you? Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater and skip your exercise or your sleep. Both of these things are too important for keeping you healthy.

I just read a study that said people who sleep less than 7 hours a night are more susceptible to the flu. There will be a lot of flu and other germs floating amongst us all at these holiday gatherings, so please get plenty of rest and get in your exercise. OH and did I mention drink plenty of water to help fill you and keep you hydrated, and please if you are drinking give your keys up to a friend or simply call a cab.

So, lets stay safe and healthy through the holidays!

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-30606462738469037172009-11-05T13:41:00.000-08:002009-11-05T14:06:23.205-08:00Holiday Foods and their calories are upon us!!!
It is that time of year when there seems to be food, especially sweets, around every corner. I have discovered that even people who do not celebrate Holidays still suffer from the extra calories that seem to be everywhere.

At coffee shops there are tempting peppermint drinks that often have whip cream or some other sugary substance, and of course all the tempting cookies, cakes & bars that they show in the case. Fast food places (which you should not be at) offer specialty shakes that seem to call out at the Holidays. Friends bring sweet treats to share to the workplace and so many workplace holiday events or happy hours. There are many parties with alcohol, cakes, pies, cookies, layered dishes, etc.....where are the vegetables? Oh, I see a few being dipped in ranch or smothered with cheese.

This is the reality of food at this time of the year and the other reality that often goes along with it is that people indulge. We consume more than we would. The weather isn't as nice to get out and get a little exercise and all the weight we have kept away all year long from our slowing metabolisms seems to jump aboard in a few short months. We can't let this happen this year, or any year actually.

There are some simple solutions for handling this problem. Now is the time to kick up the caloric exertion. If you already exercise, then maybe it is a good time to get a trainer for a couple of months to show you something new, or push you a little harder. It is better to do it now rather than wait until January after you've already added weight. It is easier to keep the weight off than to try to lose it after gaining. If you don't exercise, then get out for a daily walk, or take a class at a gym or community center.

If you are going to make some bad food choices and indulge at a party, then make sure you eat healthy for as much of the weeks prior and after that you can. The day of the even stick to healthy veggies and lean protein so that you get your daily needed intake. Drink water when you first arrive to a restaurant or party so that you won't over indulge. The water will help fill you. Also, at a restaurant order a healthy soup or salad first to help fill you before heavy entree's or desserts.

The biggest concern I have for everyone is to please not drink too much, especially if you are driving. Alcohol calories quickly add up and alcohol quickly impairs our abilities. Drink water between each alcoholic beverage. If you ned to look like you have a drink, or a simple soda or shirley temple so you can look like you are drinking, or even non-alcoholic beer.

Enjoy the Holidays and the food responsibly with plenty of exercise and rest and you can stay away from those dreaded pounds that you will be crying over in the spring. Of course, if you find yourself with those pounds call me and I can set up a training program for you privately or with a group.

Stay Healthy

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-53457931945584787962009-10-10T20:40:00.000-07:002009-10-10T21:11:54.608-07:00There is something I have noticed happening a lot this past year. People taking the first step towards change and then after a few steps forward, they stop.

For years people, articles, the news, and talk shows have written about and talked about the need for people to take the first step. It is often said that if people can just get up and take that first step they will be on their way to success. However, the first step, even though very important, is not the step that gets us over the finish line, the last step is and there are so many steps in-between.

I seem to be witnessing a different phenomenon in the last few years. So many people taking first steps to get started on their way to success. However, after a short period of time their investment wanes. They do not have the continuing energy, desire or determination to finish what has been started. I believe this is due to the length of time that it takes to see results.

People can often gather the needed excitement and energy to get to a trainer, life coach, dietitian, tutor, therapist, counselor etc, but the focus and dedication needed to sustain is often not there. I believe when people make a lot of these starts and stops, it can be quite damaging on their ability to even get started in the future. These short term dedications without success start to build a level of dissatisfaction or even jadedness towards any of these activities or people that can help.

Sustaining a new regime or new way of doing things can be so difficult. When faced with whether or not to go or whether or not to change actions, it is much more comfortable to do things the old way, even if it doesn't produce the results that we want. That is why so many people wait until there are dire circumstances or they are in a lot of emotional pain before they actually make changes. Why do you think addicts don't change until they've hit their bottom?

This doesn't have to be the case. If someone is armed with knowing that after a short period of time it will be hard to sustain, they can have the professional they are working with set up situations to help them continue. They can pay ahead for sessions for example and schedule a month or two during there first few sessions while they are still in the honey moon phase. For some things, like personal training, they can find a buddy to do it with, or even have the trainer find a slightly more advanced or dedicated partner to pair the person with so they have even another person to be accountable to.

Most of all, being emotionally and mentally prepared at the beginning to know that these slumps will occur and that triumph can be achieved and excitement and/or contentment will come back, especially as results start to show.

Believe in yourself, and after you make it through the first step, keep moving forward and you will be able to attain positive results.

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-33847522889387180522009-09-20T21:40:00.000-07:002009-09-20T21:50:10.000-07:00Exercise and sleepAs always, the news is always coming up with some statics about something. One such statistic I heard lately was that some people studied said that exercise actually made them not sleep as much. Well that would be true if someone is sleeping too much. Exercise, then would be providing needed energy to a persons life, there by causing them to sleep less hours. However, I have only found very positive accounts about exercise and sleep for the average person.

Usually, a self-starter, easily motivated and energetic person is going to exercise on their own volition. These people who already have a lot of energy will find that exercise will help to burn off some of that energy, it will increase seratonin and melatonin which all will allow the individual to experience better sleep.

People who are not motivated to exercise may already have a much lower energy level which causes them to have a more sedentary life which will often lead to much more sleeping time, but not necessarily good sleep. With the onset of exercise, these people can experience a lessened need for the amount of sleep, but should still acheive better sleep during their 7 to 8 hours that is recommended for a healthy lifestyle.

The bottom line is exercise affects sleep in a positve way and is one of the many reasons people should exercise.

Have a fabulous day all, and if you need to lose weight, try to take out 100 calories from your diet everyday over the next month and see what happens :-)

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-2111186051617681432009-08-27T15:46:00.000-07:002009-08-27T16:18:49.693-07:00THE MYTH OF EXERCISE!!!Well Hello Everybody. So sorry to be gone so long, but I got married on July 31st and I just had way to much to do! I'm back now and I am a little upset at the media trying to "stir things up" about exercise.

Has everyone read the Time Magazine article about exercise? If you haven't, you may have heard on TV all the crazy reports about exercise not causing people to lose weight. Now, I agree that the only way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you burn. That is the bottom line and the big secret. However, how are we going to burn those calories, not by sitting at our computers. We need to get up and move around and exercising is a great way to burn more calories.

The real key here is to understand that your body burns calories all the time, even while sleeping. Calories are the energy we use to do everything we do. Therefore, the more you do, the more effort you use, the harder you work and the longer you work, the more calories you burn. The problem for a lot of people and this formula is that when they work harder and longer, they are hungrier and they eat more. This does not mean exercise doesn't help you lose weight, it means people are still over eating. Consuming more calories than they burn off. It seems to me then, that the reason people don't lose weight is they eat more.

There are no ways around it. No products, no special weight loss pills, no supplements, no fad diets, nothing that is going to change the hard line facts that to lose weight we must put out more energy and eat less. Exercise, therefore, is a great way to burn a few extra calories. After you get adjusted to your new routine and your food in-take, the major hunger pangs will subside and you will be able to burn fat while exercising and not leave the gym and put the calories back in by taking a trip to a restaurant or store on the way home.

It would be great if there was a quick fix or an easy way to lose weight. There isn't, there is only one way and that is why a good personal trainer can take you through sessions which are geared to burning calories, but also increasing muscle mass. Why is that important? Simply because a muscular body burns more calories all the time than a fat body or even a thin body with no muscle mass. Muscles require much more energy to move and when you add muscle you change the toneness of your body, the shapliness of your body and the efficiency of your body and your heart.

Exercise is good for you in so many ways. Exercise is linked to prolonged life, less risk of heart disease and cancer, better sleep habits, and less depression. With a trainer like me, I can help you plan your diet so that you stay within your calories, eat food that will make you healthier & happier, food that will fill you and you will see weight loss, but you have to want to go through the hard part of making changes. In the end, if you dedicate enough time to your goal you will reach it and exercise will be a key part in your weight loss. You don't put on 10,20,30, 50, etc pounds in a couple of weeks or a month, so taking it off will also take longer than a month.

Dedicating the time and yourself to the process will make you feel better, be stronger and look better all at the same time. There is no myth. You need to burn more calories than you eat, adding exercise to your life can help you do that, as long as you don't add more calories in the process.

I wish you all luck. Contact me through my website www.bellabodyandmind.com and get started today. If you are not local, I do diet coaching and planning through skype and e-mail as well as Life Coaching.

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-58772794535522961192009-06-21T08:06:00.000-07:002009-06-21T09:09:12.907-07:00We are what we eatHello everyone!
I know I haven't blogged recently, I'm trying to get to the computer more regularly. However, I am a fitness & health professional, so I spend much of my time up on my feet and away from the computer! I am also getting married July 31st. Yeah! and I am super busy! Eventhough that is exciting, today I would love to talk about what we eat today and how it affects us.

So many people just eat whatever they can think of, get their hands on, or what they want, and often their is no real nutritional value to the food. What are foods with nutritional value? Vegetables, Fruits, Whole grains, and lean meats. In that order. You should intake more vegetables in any given day than any other food group. Vegetables are high in nutrients, vitamins and fiber as are fruits. Fruits, however, have a lot of natural sugars, therefore, it is recommended to eat more vegetables.

When we consume the proper amounts of vegetables and fruits (actual ones, not juices, pills, the next packaged fad to help us) we feel better, look better, think clearer and we have no need for vitamin supplements (except for vitamin D). Almost all vitamin studies done by doctors & schools, not vitamin companies have shown that taking a vitamin alone does not give a proper substitute for the vitamins we need and that they are not absorbed and used in the body the way the vitamins should be. I am not saying to not take a vitamin supplement, you should consult your doctor for that especially if you have a condition that creates or is caused by certain vitamin deficincies. I am, although, saying that you should be consuming your vitamins through food first and foremost. You may find that if you do, your doctor will say you don't need to take a supplement.

Food is our energy source for all of our energy. Movement, thought, even sleep. Without proper levels of what our bodies need, we won't have the energy we need. Like cars need gas and oil to make them operate, we need food. Food is our gas! Also, when a car has gas, but not proper levels of oil, it will still break down. So, you can give yourself any food to keep yourself running, however without the oil(nutrients, vitabmins, minerals) you will still break down in one way or another.

Food and exercise affect the level of effeciency we have each day. I know for myself that without the proper food, I can get cranky and tired. If I don't eat well and rest, I usually find myself catching a cold. Food and exercise affect our moods and our emotions. When your spouse or child are cranky give them some healthy food and you will usually find an attitude adjustment. For example, type A personalities become calmer when given a little bit of starchy carb (healthy ones are carrots, corn & potato's) and a little bit of dark chocolate. So when you want to have a discussion with that type A person, feed them first to get the best results. Don't give the calm person those starchy carbs before needed them to focus, they will just want to rest, feed them some lean proteins and green vegetables and they will have energy.

These are just a couple of examples. You can play these out further, imagine if you eat a donut for breakfast or give one to your child before school, don't you think your work or your childs school work will reflect it? Now imagine you don't eat at all, you've just spent 8 plus hours not filling up, there is no more gas in the tank, how with the car(you) manage to go. Just sputtering along barely making it to the next point. Sure, you have some stored fat that you can access, but fat isn't what you need to make your brain and body work, you are better off exercising off that stored fat while putting a healthy energy source into your body.

If you want your children to be bright and happy feed them well so their brains can develop and give them plenty of sleep. The body energizes and the brain develops for children while they sleep. Encourage naps, even just 20 minutes. Not just for your kids, but for yourself. The food and sleep change your brain chemistry. You become a healthier thinker and you make better choices for yourself and your loved ones. It is pertinent to pay attention to what you put into your body and how you take care of yourself!

So, now you say "okay, I understand this. I get it. But I don't like these foods and I don't know where to get them quickly." And, I say to you: Once you start eating better, you will find yourself craving the better, healthier choices. It might take a few months to get over the cravings for that greasy burger or chips or candy, but you can do it. I did.

In my teens and twenties I started eating all the bad fast foods and chips and sodas etc and gained a couple of pounds and started feeling terrible. Slowly I realized certain things made me feel bad and I started just cutting out a few things here and there. First to go soda, then fatty red meats like fast food and so on. Eventually I became someone who actually craves brocoli, and salads, fruits and good cheese. I do still enjoy a lean steak or some ice cream. I like a little bit of dark chocolate and once a month or so I drink an Italian soda. I don't at all feel deprived. As a matter of fact, I love to eat.

When you eat properly, you actually can consume more food with less calories. I don't say throw out everything bad all the time. We must live our lives in balance and there are some things that each of us loves to have as a treat. That is exactly what it should be though, a treat.

Now, go out, live your life in balance. Life to the fullest. Make the changes that are necessary and don't be afraid. Grab life by the horns and make the best of it. It is the only one you have!

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-60677168843488427002009-05-13T15:42:00.000-07:002009-05-13T15:53:51.381-07:00Health and Wellness, Empowerment Speech
Hello everyone!

I think one of the best things that have come about in the past few years is that people really seem to be getting more in tune with the need to find balance in life and to live healthy so we can "live long and prosper" Truly Spock never knew the power of his words!

It really is true that as people we can learn to find a wonderful balance and to understand balance so that when those in-evadable days come along where we slip out of balance, we have tools and a desire to find our way back. I want to be a source of fulfillment for them because as we all know now that we can not be good mothers, fathers, wives, husbands, sisters, brothers, etc if we haven't first taken care to fill our tanks so we have something to offer others. Now it is imperative.

As a Life Coach, I teach people how to broaden their perspectives, how to find other choices and how to be pro-active actors instead of reactionary reactors in their lives. We don't need to re-act to what the news or other people say or think. We can choose to have our own thoughts and solutions to life's problems. You can start by taking advantage of many good prices and specials out there. If you still have a decent income or still have your job, help the economy and don't feel guilty about choosing to buy some really good prices products and services. If you are not doing so well financially, then see if you can get what you need in trade. Barter with someone. There are so many possibilities. They exist, even if we don't see them.

If you need help seeing the positives and possibilities in today's world, call me and lets have a consultation. http://www.bellabodyandmind.com/

Have a beautiful day.

In much abundance

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-36833400440862275442009-03-12T17:12:00.000-07:002009-03-12T17:16:46.020-07:00Think big Huntington Beach, Life Coach adviceCiao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-30736475161586632932009-02-25T13:07:00.000-08:002009-02-25T13:11:31.154-08:00Personal Training & Pilates Pricing in Huntington BeachI would just like to take a moment to talk about personal training & Pilates pricing. I have been researching pricing on the web and have discovered there is a great divide in pricing sometimes. On average, most trainers and Pilates instructors that work privately are all around the same general pricing structures, I have however, noticed some trainers working for very low pricing that is much lower than the industry standards in this area. I would just like to request that you meet with the trainer and get to know them and their capabilities before you buy. I do believe to some extent that we get what we pay for. Food for thought.
Hoping you are having a wonderful day.
In much abundance

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-22138871154877565602009-02-25T12:54:00.000-08:002009-02-25T13:07:05.352-08:00Huntington Beach Personal Training & Pilates SpecialsWe all know that we are in some times that seem pretty uncertain. It seems to be bad enough that the banking & housing markets have caused such huge problems in our economy, but top that off here in California our budget is such a mess that it is going to cost us more to live here. Yet, we can't just sit back and let it consume us. As citizens we should all be even more focused to what we each can do in our businesses, jobs etc to make a difference and keep the economy going. In these tough times people often give up on the good things that they do to take care of themselves, such as healthy eating and exercising. Stress and money cause people to often make decisions that make them feel worse. I urge you, in these times to keep yourself healthy and strong with your exercise, your diet and your life choices. I always offer new clients a special to get started but these are one time offers, however, right now, if you read this blog and take advantage, I will double the special. You can use it twice in a row. In other words, 3 Personal Training Sessions for $99 now is 6 for $198 if you mention this blog within the next 45 days. 3 Private Pilates Sessions for $120 is now 6 for $240 if you mention this blog within the next 45 days. You can purchase 3 at a time for two consecutive times, or you can purchase 6 right up front. Do this before April 11th. Put your tax return to good use for yourself, or be strong and healthy when you face that tax bill on April 15th.

In much abundance

Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-17029356260972765962009-02-13T12:57:00.000-08:002009-02-13T13:03:46.902-08:00Huntington Beach Trainer, Life Coaching Speech at Chamber of CommerceHello Everyone,
I was up bright and early today to give my first speech at the Huntington Beach Chamber Winners Circle Breakfast. If you've never been and you have your own business, you should definitely check it out. My speech went really well. I was able to let people know what I do here at Bella Body and Mind and a little insight on my philosophy to Personal Training and Life Coaching. It was really great when Aaron Soto of Deztech (my website designer) got up to give his introduction and promoted my site while promoting his business for getting it up and running and onto google. Aaron is a really great guy to do business with. I would recommend his company to anyone. He works quickly and efficiently and did a great job for me.
Wishing you all great abundance & Blessings
Ciao,
Laura Fortino
Bella Body & Mind of Huntington Beach
http://www.bellabodyandmind.comAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6012673501418056095.post-22340184210107671502009-02-09T12:30:00.000-08:002009-02-09T12:34:00.371-08:00Huntington Beach Chamber SpeechHi Everyone,
Just a quick reminder that I will be giving a short (2 minute) but memorable speech at the Chamber Breakfast on Friday morning FEB 13th.
